Too Much Color? (part I)

Welcome to the Turkish Bazaar.

Clearly a black and white floor, black dining table, a pair of hot pink Parsons Chairs, lime green side chairs covered in a silk plaid, which has nothing to do with the silk plaid draperies, all surrounded by the nearly over the top sunshine yellow wall color, is way way way, too much color. It’s also way too much pattern. I don’t even want to talk about the rug.

Regrettably, this all came to be on my watch, but it happened slowly; sure I have two chairs you can have…oh, the room is cold, here’s a rug…..gee, I can’t use these drapes, you want them? Next thing you know-Turkish bazaar.

I thought for five minutes that changing the drapes to a happy yellow stripe would be a way to start getting this room under control.

But after five more minutes of thinking, I convinced my young daughter to reclaim another room in the house for the dining room.

Dining Room Before

And now, the “middle room”, is a charming dining room, with a pretty view and simple built in shelving and a reasonable amount of color,

We spray painted the chairs in a satin finish black enamel and discovered a perfectly lovely toffee colored linen under the busy pink plaid. Gee…wonder how that got there….

Now the pink chairs and the black chairs sit quietly around the black dining table. I tied giant bows around the experiment my daughters three cats have been conducting on the side of the chairs. I think there’s just enough fabric for two simple slip covers, which will hide the rips and tears, but I sort of like the bows for now, and the cats, do not.

Having peeled away black, white, lime green, hot pink, that god awful rug, and the very formal silk draperies, a rather nice space appeared. I hated to do it, but the painted floor needed to go in preparation for what was coming…….ah, the TV room.

I decided to paint the floor to match the floors in the rest of the house, which are very old fir, finished in a very fine oil based varnish. The floors are so old, and the finish has a patina which could never be reproduced, but I was determined to try my best. I love the black and white-love to paint it, love to see it, but wood makes more sense. Time to Faux Bois, the Bois.

Two shades of yellow latex paint, laid on very this way and that, creates the undertone.

Next, a haphazardly applied exterior brown deck stain, which dries super fast, and sticks and runs and behaves so poorly over the paint, that a wood grain of sorts, simply happens.

Next, a tinted polyurethane tones the whole mess, and pushes the paint work ‘down”, creating a very believable, very quick, aged hardwood floor.

This room is not large, perhaps 12 x14; Once the giant sofa, gigantic television, a small area rug, and a simple chair are moved in, the floor turns into an inconspicuous non-descript wood.

The yellow linen drapes melt right into the paint color, which helps to make the room feel larger.

My daughter is still surrounded by all the colors she loves, only now, they are not all in one room. Anyone need a rug??

When talented people, such as you, get going with ideas and colors, it is like an act of God…it all comes together like magic. I have little to no decorating sense, other than knowing what I like, but that doesn’t gurantee it all goes together at the end of the day! I am in awe.
